This program is run by Istanbul Technical University (ITU) and SUNY Maritime College. It has been admitting students since 2003. The period of study is 4 years and the medium of the program is English.
To begin their studies, students must receive a minimum TOEFL score of 79 IBT (or an equivalent score from another internationally recognized English exam). Those who cannot achieve proficiency in the language are to attend a preparatory program in English at ITU. Students are allowed up to 2 years to complete the preparatory program. In the class, apart from English language education, non-credit basic maritime certificate education and maritime orientation education are given. If a student already has proficiency in English, non-credit basic maritime certificate education and maritime orientation education will be given in the fall semester of the first year.
Fall term of the first year is studied at ITU and spring term is at SUNY Maritime College. In the summer semester of the first year, the first open sea training is given in SUNY Maritime’s the training vessel for 2 months. The fall and spring semesters of the second year will be studied at SUNY Maritime College and in the summer term of the second year, second open sea training is again given in SUNY Maritime’s the training vessel for 2 months. The fall semester of the third year is studied at ITU. Open sea training for spring and summer semesters of the third year is given in national/international merchant ships for 8 months on a salary basis. Education in fall and spring semesters of the fourth year is studied at ITU. Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive an undergraduate diploma both from ITU and SUNY Maritime College.
The payment is to be made in TL currency while studying at ITU and in US Dollar while studying at SUNY Maritime College. Registered students take ITU courses at the ITU Tuzla Campus (Istanbul) and take SUNY courses at SUNY Maritime College (Throgs Neck, New York).
